Authenticity, tradition, culture and identity are intertwined in how fashion is shaped. Growing up in the beating heart of the capital, I have often questioned what culture and identity mean to individuals – beginning with me. I want to explore these themes to understand the idea of ownership and belonging in regards to culture and where the lines blur between appropriation and appreciation, from trends to materials to garments, and how localised cultures influences a modern globalised society.
My motivation derives from people who have chosen to embrace their culture and the confidence to be as authentic as possible. The way society is built we often question our self, on who we are because of the different aspects we encounter. Growing up I have often asked myself the same question on who I really am and what do the clothes I wear say about me. Being born and brought up in London I have experienced a mix of cultural clashes, coming from a tradition Indian home to being brought up in a city so diverse. The contrasts of the intricate detailing of Indian wear to the modern abstract streetwear style.
I become fascinated with the idea of cross-culture consumerism and the idea of exploring identity within that, as the diversity of culture has spread from what we once knew - you aren’t what you seem in today’s society. In this current generation more individuals understand the need to bring culture to modern society as the demands for it grow, people want to feel the sense of being connected – a part of something.
“what we choose to wear reflects how we view the world and how we want the world to view us.” [Corner. 2014, p. 17]
